Becoming Chelsea
A play freely inspired by the life of activist and whistleblower Chelsea Manning
Actor Sébastien René won the Best Actor award at the ACQT Critics’ Awards in October 2021 for his performance in the role inspired by Chelsea Manning.
In the early hours of the night, a woman teeters dangerously on the window of a hotel in Old Montreal. Below, the rain-slick cobblestones pass under the feet of an insomniac jogger, while a motorcyclist dressed all in black prowls the empty streets. When these three paths converge at an elevator cab, a startling closed-room drama unfolds, and in the reflection of this mirrored cage, masks begin to fall.
Becoming Chelsea by playwright Sébastien Harrisson is freely inspired by the life of activist Chelsea Manning, a globally renowned and highly publicized whistleblower. This production emerges from extensive documentary research and a reflection on ethics, both civic and artistic. The play is brought to life under Eric Jean’s clever direction, painting a portrait of a society searching for meaning, like a mirror reflecting our individual and collective concerns.
The play was widely acclaimed by critics upon its premiere in the winter of 2020 at Théâtre Prospero. Actor Sébastien René was also awarded the Best Actor prize at the ACQT Critics’ Awards in October 2021 :
« Once again, the actor proved his immense talent in taking on a complex role addressing issues of identity and gender. Skillfully avoiding any trace of caricature, he delivered a performance that was accurate, human, and deeply moving in portraying the character inspired by the American trans activist Chelsea Manning. »
