His artistic approach is that of a poet’s; he is a “listener” who takes everyday sounds and transforms them in countless ways into his music.
Michel Robidoux began his professional career as a rock musician in the late 1960s before becoming known as a theatre musician and sound designer. He has been associated with Les Deux Mondes since 1976 and became one of its artistic directors in 1989. He has been involved in most of the company’s productions, including Promised Land 1989) – co-created and co-produced with Teatro dell’Angolo (Italy), The Tale of Teeka (1991), les Nuages de terre, a co-creation by Les Deux Mondes and Ki-Yi Mbock Theatre of Abidjan, and Living Memory (2001). Created in 1996 and performed until 2005, the musical drama Leitmotiv was built upon his score and music. In the company’s most recent creation, Gold Mountain, he rejoins Yves Dubé (visual and video concept) and Daniel Meilleur (direction and visual concept) in a new theatrical approach that emphasizes the use of multimedia.
David has just celebrated thirty nine years as an actor. During that time he has worked extensively in film, television, theatre and radio both in the UK and Internationally. He is still remembered by many for The Chinese Detective on BBC television. Roles in films like Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Bond film A View To A Kill, and The Chinese Detective on BBC television have widened his fan base. His most recent work includes the award-winning The Liverpool Nativity, The Chucklevision Christmas Special and Bo and The Spirit World (BBC). Feature films include Act of Grace and Triage. Theatre work includes King Lear (RSC/Yellow Earth Theatre & Shanghai Dramatic Co), Brecht’s Turandot (Hampstead Theatre) and The King & I at the Royal Albert Hall.
Eugene graduated from Hope Street Limited’s Physical Theatre course in 1995. He has worked with professional touring companies such as Kaboodle, MYPT and Red Ladder. His theatre credits include: The Bacchae, Hamlet, In The Frame, Wiseguys, Rogue Herries & Son, The Ramayana (Birmingham Repertory Theatre). Hansel & Gretel and The Owl & The Pussycat (Bolton Octagon), Brand New World (Positive Impact) and Top of the World (Spike Theatre).
Eugene has also played key roles in several one-off dramas for BBC 2 including Substance, The Caravan, In Deep, Merseybeat and the Paul O’Grady sitcom Eyes Down. He also featured in the movie The Sleeping Dictionary opposite Jessica Alba, Bob Hoskins and Brenda Blethin. Eugene is also an instructor of Wing Tsun (Kung Fu).
A cofounder of Deux Mondes, his career has been inextricably linked with the company, having been closely involved with practically all its productions, first as an actor-presenter and then as a director. He directed Crying to Laugh in 1981, the show which led to international acclaim for the company as it was staged over 550 times until 1988. He co-created Promised Land, a coproduction with Teatro dell’Angolo of Turin (580 presentations from 1989 to 2000). He initiated and directed The Tale of Teeka (1991) by Michel Marc Bouchard. The Tale of Teeka (546 presentations) earned several accolades including a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in 1993. The 90s also brought another new exploration: that of how multimedia can serve theatrical purposes. With Michel Robidoux (sound and music environment) and Yves Dubé (video and visual design), Daniel Meilleur further developed his palette as a co-conceptualist, visual designer and director : Leitmotiv (1996), Living Memory (2001) and Notes from the Journey Home (2008). More than thirty years of touring and appearances at numerous international festivals have made Deux Mondes a player on the world stage, and have secured Daniel Meilleur’s undisputed status as a specialist in theatre for all audiences.
For the past 30 years, Yves Dubé has been active in the development of the performing and audio-visual arts by bringing them together interactively. He is highly acclaimed as a stage photographer and for his numerous visual collaborations with Carbone 14, producing for them video environments and other elements. Yves Dubé is a valued creative contributor to many theatre, dance and opera companies.
In 1996, he joined Les Deux Mondes. Along with Daniel Meilleur, he was responsible for the visual aspect of Leitmotiv (1996) for which he designed the video component and its interactivity with the performers. This integration of video into the language of the stage continued in Living Memory (2001) 2,191 Nights and Notes from the Journey, which he also co-designed with Normand Canac-Marquis, Michel Robidoux and Daniel Meilleur. In the company’s most recent creation, Gold Mountain by David Yip and Kevin Wong, a coproduction of Deux Mondes and Liverpool’s Unity Theatre, he is reunited with Daniel Meilleur in the show’s visual design and creation of its multimedia language.
